Habitat
for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational
Christian housing organization. They welcome all people to join
them as they build simple, decent, affordable, houses in partnership
with those in need of adequate shelter. Since 1976, Habitat has
built more than 125,000 houses in more than 80 countries, including some
45,000 houses across the United States.
SMUMC
has been involved in various Habitat builds. Most recently,
however, our congregation took part in the “Gimme Shelter” campaign
sponsored by the Santa Ana and San Diego Districts of the United
Methodist Church. Pastor Mark was instrumental in planning a
100-mile bike ride from Fullerton to San Diego with Bishop Mary Anne
Swenson and other United Methodists. Methodist church members from
across the area, including our own, pledged 10 cents a mile.
Thousands of dollars were raised to help build a home for a family in
Santa Ana.

In June, our congregation worked at the site of the
“Methodist House.” And we helped once again in November.
If you would like to learn more information about
Habitat in general or how our church is involved, please contact Monte
or Cindy Dunard. The Dunard’s have worked on many Habitat
houses, including “Blitz Builds” with former president Jimmy
Carter. You can
