In
the aftermath of September 11, millions of people responded with love
and care. The Red Cross was inundated with blood donors. However,
in the daily routine of life, the Red Cross and other places such as our
local Mission Hospital are challenged DAILY to meet the needs of
patients. Blood donors are in continuous need… sometimes
drastically. Blood cannot be stockpiled. The shelf life
ranges from a few hours for some cells to 42 days for others.
People must donate blood on a regular basis to maintain an adequate
community supply.
As people of faith, we need to respond to this
call. As one congregation member noted a couple years ago... Jesus
shed his blood on Good Friday so we might have life. We can donate
our blood and help give life to someone who is in need. It has
become a tradition at SMUMC to mark the day that Christ gave his life
for us so that we might have eternal life by giving of ourselves so that
others may live. A single donation can save three lives.
